Dear STOCS Friend:
Many in the congregation have asked me the same question. Living in Dewitt, New York, what can be undertaken to support Israel in a time of war? Of course, the obvious answer would be moral support, attending rallies, financial contribution i.e., through the Syracuse Federation’s Operation Swords of campaign.
In this week's Torah reading, we learn that prior to meeting Rifka, Yitzhak was steeped in prayer. Our rabbis teach us he was reciting the afternoon service. The Talmud also teaches us the time of the afternoon service is a עת רצון an opportune time for Teffilah. Additionally, we learn אליהו הנביא Elijah the Prophet was answered by Hashem at Mincha time. "A person should always be conscientious concerning the Mincha prayer, for indeed, Eliyahu was only answered through the Mincha prayer" (Brachot 6b).
Israel and its citizens and the IDF can be strengthened immeasurably by prayer, yes, in Dewitt, New York. My answer to all those who say what can I do? Double and triple your efforts to attend Mincha at schul. Teffilah is a powerful weapon at our disposal, and it is being underutilized. I am not only referring to men at services, but women as well. We cannot fathom the scope and power of prayer when recited with others in shul. So, over the next few days, today at Mincha, Shabbas and Sunday Mincha as well, prioritize your time and be part of the victory by Israel over evil in the world!
I look forward to seeing you at Mincha!
Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Shore
